Guide to restore iPhone 4 with iTunes error 1004.

Are you receiving an error message like the following?

“Could not purchase. An unknown error occurred (1004). There was an error in the iTunes Store. Please try again later. OK.”

If yes, then here’s a complete guide to lead you towards removing the error efficiently. The error appears when you try to upgrade iPhone 4 to a new iOS using iTunes. While going through this process, you may unexpectedly encounter the iTunes Error 1004 and the iPhone gets stuck in recovery mode.

This is a very common error encountered by millions of iPhone users worldwide. However, it is very easy to fix the iPhone 4 iTunes Error 1004 in a few easy steps. If you are using Mac OSX then you need to follow the steps given below for the error fix.

  • Open finder.
  • Press the COMMAND + SHIFT keys and then the ‘G’ key to open the folder directly.
  • Write “/private/etc/” in the required field and then click ‘Go’.
  • In the directory find the ‘hosts’.
  • Now drag the document to the desktop.
  • Open it in the text editor.
  • Find the line that contains the “gs.apple.com”, now you can either remove it entirely or simply place a hash (#) mark to make the line void.
  • Now save the file.

For Windows users, the steps given below must be followed.

  • Locate the ‘hosts’ file on your system. If you are using Windows 95/98/Me then you would find it in C:\Windows\hosts. If you are a Windows NT/2000/XP Pro user, go to C:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts. Windows XP, Vista 7 users have to go to C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.
  • Now right click the document and “Open With” notepad or text editor.
  • You would find a line with “gs.apple.com”. Remove it completely and then save the file.

However, sometimes the aforementioned steps do not help since the iPhone gets stuck in recovery mode. If the problem is not fixed easily then you need to go through iPhone data recovery to the recovery of all lost or inaccessible data.
